Published April 12, 2016

Innovation, high-quality care and personal attention are the driving forces within the NOVA Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Division. Vinh Tran, M.D., F.A.A.O.S., and his team take pride in offering patients the best possible treatment paired with a commitment to excellence.

Dr. Tran has remained dedicated to providing cutting-edge care since entering the orthopaedic field in 1998. Shortly after completing a lower extremity reconstruction fellowship with an emphasis in foot and ankle care at the University of Maryland Medical System, he was the first to perform a total ankle replacement at St. Luke’s Hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvania. This was one of many firsts for Dr. Tran. He has since been the first to perform total ankle replacements in Glen Burnie, Maryland, at the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital in 2005 and in Fairfax, Virginia.

Dr. Tran founded NOVA Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine as a solo practice after working with the late Dr. Tony Aram in 2005. The division specializes in joint replacement, foot and ankle reconstruction, sports medicine, shoulder arthroscopy and more. Strategic treatment, fast recovery and positive outcomes are the central focus at every touch point of patient care. Dr. Tran understands his patients’ needs and works to get them back to their active lives faster using the latest in MAKOplasty techniques.

MAKOplasty is a robotic-armed assisted surgery procedure used for partial and total joint replacements. Dr. Tran was inspired to adopt the technique because of its accuracy, reproducibility and proven outcomes.  Five years later, the technique has confirmed its value and effectiveness. His more than 150 MAKOplasty patients from across the county have benefited from improved treatments and faster recovery times. Dr. Tran is pleased to offer this leading technique and looks forward to expanding his expertise by embracing future technology innovations for total joint replacement procedures.

In addition to offering advanced, quality care, the NOVA Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine team focuses on providing patients with personalized attention. The division provides a unique level of comfort to the Metropolitan Washington area’s growing Vietnamese population. As the only Vietnamese orthopaedic provider in the region, many seek Dr. Tran for his expertise and relatability. Consequently, the division enjoys a patient base that is 40 percent Vietnamese.

The division joined The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics to collaborate on best practices, increase its negotiation power and improve reimbursements. Since joining, NOVA Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine has become deeply vested in The Centers’ mission and has benefited from the group’s vast resources. The division has fostered new relationships with internal medicine groups and improved referral connections. Dr. Tran and his team look forward to The Centers’ bright future and upcoming initiatives.
