Division Spotlight: Orthopedic Solutions

Published June 16, 2016

Dr. James Kunec opened the doors to Orthopedic Solutions with a single office in Laurel, Maryland. As a solo practitioner, Dr. Kunec founded the practice with the mission to provide his patients with the best possible care, a goal that remained top-of-mind as the practice grew to two locations with four physicians, and again when it joined The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics just a few years ago.

Dr. Joseph Layug joined the practice in 1995, followed by Drs. Mark Bullock and Jerry Thomas II. To care for more patients, the division then opened its second office in Clarksville, Maryland, which has since relocated to Columbia. Together, the team at Orthopedic Solutions provides compassionate, high-quality general orthopaedic services including general orthopaedic surgery, fracture care, hip and knee replacements, arthroscopic surgery, sports medicine treatments and treatments of musculoskeletal disorders, as well as in-house x-ray services at both locations. More than just high-quality medical care, Orthopedic Solutions is proud to make their patients feel welcome and at home when they visit their doctors. The dedicated staff’s mission is to make each visit to the office a pleasant experience.

The team at Orthopedic Solutions agrees – the appeal of general orthopaedics is not only the variety of treatments offered, but the ability to help heal patients with all types of injuries and conditions. Helping patients get back to doing what they love makes the job very rewarding. The doctors at Orthopedic Solutions pride themselves on being quality physicians who truly care about their patients. The division focuses on what is best for the patient, always looking for the most appropriate treatment. Patients often come to the office thinking they need surgery, and are delighted to learn that at Orthopedic Solutions, they may find less invasive options for treatment.

Orthopedic Solutions is a dedicated member of the communities it serves, from high school athletics support to participation in community health fairs to work with local seniors. Dr. Layug previously volunteered as the team physician for Reservoir High School in Howard County, where he provided on-site medical services to the football team. And Orthopedic Solutions’ joint replacement team recently spoke to a group of senior citizens at Laurel Hospital, educating them about hip and knee replacements, where they discussed who is a candidate for the surgeries, why patients need replacements and alternative treatments.

A small practice of just four physicians, Orthopedic Solutions felt the overwhelming pressures as the medical industry continued to change, which led to the decision to join CAO. Previously, the division faced challenges when working with insurance companies, and now enjoys the prominence that comes with being a part of a larger group. Joining CAO has also enabled Orthopedic Solutions to negotiate better rates on malpractice insurance, equipment, medication and supplies.

Looking ahead, Orthopedic Solutions is excited about the opportunity to communicate from division to division, making it convenient for patients to visit more than one doctor within CAO. Orthopedic Solutions is proud to have joined CAO. The decision to join was an easy one, as CAO’s mission to provide compassionate, high-quality orthopaedic care aligns closely with the values Orthopedic Solutions embodies each and every day.
