Dr. Mark Chilton Serves as a Board Examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery

Published August 12, 2014

In July, Dr. Mark Chilton from the Mid-Maryland Musculoskeletal Institute spent a week in Chicago serving as a board examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS).

This marked the 15th year he has served as an examiner, which includes reviewing all surgical cases a surgeon has performed over a specified period of time, including all notes, consents, billings, x-rays and other related documents.

In order to accurately and fairly examine each candidate on his/her cases, Dr. Chilton is required to be up-to-date on current trends and techniques and have a wide knowledge base on each topic. In the past, his examinations have focused on spine-related cases, but his exams shifted for the first time this year to joint replacement. In turn, his own examining technique is also reviewed each year by others to evaluate consistency, fairness, and bias.

Although the week is exhausting, Dr. Chilton says he is honored to be chosen as an examiner and have the opportunity to dialogue with the most recognized leaders in American orthopaedics.

And as the only board examiner in Maryland, Dr. Chilton has also offered to meet with new physicians throughout The Centers to help prepare them for their board examinations or to be re-credentialed.
