Division Spotlight: Orthopaedic Medicine and Surgery

Published May 8, 2015

Opening its doors in 1985, Orthopaedic Medicine and Surgery was started by Dr. Louis Levitt, Secretary of The Centers, under the founding principle of treating each patient with the same standard of care you would provide to your own family. As one of The Centers’ few divisions located in downtown Washington, D.C., and the only full-time, fully staffed practice in the district, Orthopaedic Medicine and Surgery largely serves patients within the city, but also provides care to many patients who travel from the suburbs for office visits. Orthopaedic Medicine and Surgery’s physicians have advanced training and expertise in treating sport and work-related injuries, as well as almost any condition that affects the neck, back and upper and lower extremities.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the division has experienced extraordinary growth that the physicians proudly attribute to high-quality care and patient referrals through positive word-of-mouth reviews. In 1995, Dr. Marc Danziger joined Dr. Levitt to offer shoulder and sports medicine care, and the practice welcomed Dr. Mark Scheer 12 years ago to round out its sports medicine offerings. Three years ago, Dr. Noah Raizman joined the practice, bringing his expertise in hand and upper extremity. Finally, last year, the practice added the expertise of Dr. Benjamin Stein, who specializes in foot and ankle treatments.

Physical therapy capabilities have also grown over the years. The practice originally opened with three physical therapists on staff and, due to strong community demand, the main office has grown to now house eight experienced physical therapists, including a certified hand therapist.

Instead of opening suburban offices as the practice continued to grow, the physicians decided to move into a larger space in downtown Washington, D.C. to meet the needs of their ever-growing patient base in the city. The physicians perform surgeries out of a physician-owned and physician-run surgical center in Bethesda.

With a focus on providing personalized and compassionate care, all the physicians have received numerous clinical and community accolades over their careers. Both Dr. Levitt and Dr. Danziger have been named Top Doctors by Washingtonian Magazine for the last 15 years, and Dr. Danziger has been listed in the Consumers’ Guide to Top Doctors by Consumers’ Checkbook. Dr. Stein received the Julius S. Neviaser Award and Dr. Raizman was recently chosen as one of the “Young Leaders” by the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH).

In an effort to help advance the profession they cherish, the physicians are very involved in the medical community in Washington, D.C., lecturing as Clinical Instructors at the Georgetown University School of Medicine and Assistant Clinical Professors at the George Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Scheer and Dr. Danziger are orthopaedic team physicians for Gallaudet University. In addition, they enjoy regularly rotating medical students through the division, and value the privilege to educate the industry’s future leaders.

With Orthopaedic Medicine and Surgery’s philosophy focused on providing the highest standard of care found only in the private practice model, joining The Centers was a natural fit and the physicians have greatly enjoyed the camaraderie found in that shared vision. Moving forward, they are excited to see The Centers continue to grow its brand, becoming a shining example to its peers for how to best deliver orthopaedic medicine.
