Dr. Peter Johnston is Among First to Use Stemless Shoulder Arthroplasty System and Patient Specific Instrumentation in the United States

Published May 8, 2015

Dr. Peter Johnston of Southern Maryland Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Center will be one of the first surgeons in the country performing Simpliciti  stemless Shoulder arthroplasty since FDA approval. The stemless shoulder arthroplasty system is redefining the total shoulder arthroplasty by providing the first press-fit, stemless, anatomic solution designed to preserve bone. The system has been used in Europe since 2004, and Dr. Johnston will be on the training team and one of the initial users in the United States.

In addition, Dr. Johnston will be the first surgeon in the country to use Tornier’s BLUEPRINT 3D planning software in an actual patient case. The software is a powerful preoperative planning tool that allows surgeons to create a 3-dimensional anatomical reconstruction from CT and perform the virtual implantation on their own. The tool will allow users to assess a variety of treatment options, and will assist with creating a final operative plan. Dr. Johnston expects this technology to change the way surgeons think about and perform shoulder replacements.
