The Center for Joint Surgery & Sports Medicine division recently awarded Ashley Ashford of South Hagerstown High School and Megan Mikulsky of Smithsburg High School the annual Dr. Tom Altizer Memorial Scholarship Award.

Among this year's pool of scholarship applicants, Ashley and Megan distinguished themselves through their pursuit of academic excellence, commitment to civic engagement, strength of character and the valuable insight that they wish to pass on to incoming freshmen. This scholarship, given each year to two graduates in Washington County, is a way to honor and continue the late Dr. Altizer's commitment to his community. Dr. Altizer founded The Center for Joint Surgery & Sports Medicine, along with Dr. Ralph Salvagno.

Ashley graduated with a 4.0 and earned induction into the National Honor Society. In her years at South Hagerstown High School, she served as a Link Leader, mentoring freshman and working as a tutor after school.

Ashley was also an active volunteer in her school's Advancement Via Individual  Determination program and   corresponding community efforts. This fall, she will pursue  a bachleor's degree from the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences at George Washington University.

Megan graduated with a 3.5 and maintained a full schedule of Advanced Placement and Honors courses throughout her four years.

A devoted athlete, Megan played varsity girls lacrosse, varsity indoor and outdoor track and served as a manager for the wrestling team. She also participated in the school's yearbook club, color guard and in the concert and marching bands, while still volunteering regularly at Misty Peaks Horse Farm and her local church. Megan plans to attend Towson University in the fall.

Please join The Center for Joint Surgery & Sports Medicine division in congratulating these outstanding young women on their many accomplishments.
