Dr. Gupta Weighs in on Isaiah Thomas's Hip Injury
On Saturday, Boston Celtics star guard Isaiah Thomas aggrevated a right hip injury that was already present, ending his season in the midst of the playoffs.
This week, he is visiting several different specialists to determine his best treatment options. We asked Dr. Asheesh Gupta, a hip arthroscopy and sports medicine specialist in our Nova Orthopedic & Spine care center, to provide some context around the injury and Thomas's likely treatment and recovery:
"It was reported that he had a labral tear with femoroacetabular impingement. This means typically that the bones of his hip joint - or more specifically, the ball - is "out of round," or that his cup has over-coverage. This leads to pinching of the labrum, when bones rub against each other. In his case, Isaiah Thomas will most likely undergo hip arthroscopy, which is a minimally-invasive "key-hole" surgery, where his torn labrum will be repaired and the irregularities of his bones will be shaved to a normal contour. Typically, he will start physical therapy immediately after surgery. In about four months following the surgery, he will most likely be able to start basketball-specific activities."
