Drug Recalls can present a unique set of challenges for any care center. Be sure to have a Medication Recall Policy in place!
Have a Medication Recall Policy in place that covers:
- Designate a point person to search the practice for all patients who had been prescribed the drug.
- Mail letters immediately to each patient instructing them to the guidance provided by the manufacturer or drug company, follow up with instruction for patients when necessary, to discuss alternative treatment options.
- Maintain a medication log that includes the patient name, date given and lot number.
- Discard any unused medications from the Care Center
- Designate someone to manage the medication storage area on a regular basis – keeping a medication log that tracks the dispensing of medications and to ensure all expired medications are disposed of properly.
- The medication storage area kept under lock and key with restricted access to ensure patients and staff can’t help themselves.
