Care Center Spotlight: Orthopaedic Surgery, Sports, and Performing Arts Medicine

Published November 25, 2019

The Orthopaedic Surgery, Sports, and Performing Arts Medicine care center of The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics provides a unique concentration of expertise to patients in Washington DC, Maryland and northern Virginia through the experience of Dr. Peter Lavine. For Dr. Lavine, orthopaedics is a family affair. He began practice in 1991 alongside his father, celebrated orthopaedic surgeon Stanford Lavine, MD until his untimely passing in 1996. Dr. Lavine would then go on to open his own private practice, continuing his work and carrying on his father’s legacy.

Dr. Lavine is an accomplished orthopaedic surgeon, with fellowship training through the prestigious AO International Fellowship in Bern Switzerland. During his early years in private practice, Dr. Lavine had the opportunity to study dance medicine, which would have a key impact on his future practice. Over time Dr. Lavine has provided treatment to numerous dancers including members of American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey, Boston Ballet, the Kirov Academy of Washington D.C., and Cirque du Soleil. He has worked with the Kennedy Center, National Theatre, & Warner Theatre to provide care for dancers traveling through DC who find themselves in need of treatment.

Currently about 15 per cent of Dr. Lavine’s practice in Washington, DC is in service to the dance community, with the remainder consisting of general orthopaedics, and sport medicine. His Alexandria practice sees more trauma cases, and total hip and knee replacement patients. At both locations his dedicated bilingual staff help Dr. Lavine to provide personalized care for patients.

Dr. Lavine enjoys blending “old-fashioned” care with new technology. Meaning, he keeps current on advances in care but he personally evaluates every patient.  This allows Dr. Lavine to build relationships with his patients so that he can know the whole person, in an effort to develop the ideal treatment plan for each individual patient. Dr. Lavine takes a conservative holistic approach to treatment, often opting for surgery as a last resort after other options have been exhausted.

Over time Dr. Lavine has served in a variety of volunteer capacities in the medical community including President & Chairman of the Medical Society in DC. he serves as a DC delegate to the American Medical Association and will assume the role of chair of the DC delegation in 2020. He is a past President of the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science. Orthopaedic Surgery, Sports, and Performing Arts Medicine joined The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics due to the belief in and desire to maintain the private practice of medicine and protect the doctor patient relationship.
