CAO Welcomes Stephen Pournaras III, MD, to Calvert Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine

The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics (CAO) is pleased to welcome Stephen Pournaras III, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, to Calvert Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine.

Dr. Pournaras brings advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of orthopaedic and sports-related injuries, with areas of expertise that include sports medicine, advanced arthroscopy, general orthopaedics and fracture care. His goal is to help patients overcome injuries, restore function and get back to the activities they enjoy.

Advanced Sports Medicine Training

Dr. Pournaras completed an Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore following his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at One Brooklyn Health in New York. He earned his medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, a master’s degree in physiology from Georgetown University and a bachelor’s degree in health science from Clemson University.

His extensive sports medicine experience also includes providing team coverage for the Baltimore Ravens, along with football, basketball and ice hockey programs at Towson University, Morgan State University and Stevenson University.

Dr. Pournaras also has a strong background in orthopaedic research and education, including contributions to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ Resident Orthopaedics Core Knowledge program and published research involving foot and ankle trauma and arthroplasty.

Dr. Pournaras sees patients at Calvert Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine in Dunkirk and Prince Frederick, Maryland.
