Biography

Dr Balkam is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in the care of hip and knee arthritis and total joint replacement. She is a native of Southern Maryland and grew up in Leonardtown. She attended the University of Virginia where she was a member of the NCAA National Championship Women’s rowing team. She then completed a Master of Science at Georgetown University before completing her medical degree at the University of Toledo where she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Dr. Balkam then completed her residency at the University of North Carolina, followed by a fellowship in Adult Total Joint Reconstruction at the Anderson Orthopaedic Clinic in Alexandria, Virginia.

 

Dr. Balkam has been an author of multiple articles in peer reviewed journals and textbook chapters and has a particular interest in furthering women in orthopaedic surgery. She is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, and the American Women’s Medical Association.

 

Dr. Balkam lives in Mechanicsville with her husband and son. Outside of orthopaedics she enjoys cooking, fitness, reading, and spending time with her family.
