Stephen Pournaras III MD — Physician

Biography

Dr. Stephen Pournaras is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, with advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of orthopaedic and sports-related injuries. He completed an Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore following his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at One Brooklyn Health in New York.

Dr. Pournaras earned his medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, where he received the Francis L. Abel Prize for Excellence in Physiology and the Surgery Medal for outstanding performance during his surgical clerkship. He also holds a master’s degree in physiology from Georgetown University and a bachelor’s degree in health science from Clemson University.

His sports medicine experience includes team coverage for the Baltimore Ravens, as well as football, basketball and ice hockey programs at Towson University, Morgan State University and Stevenson University.

In addition to patient care, Dr. Pournaras has contributed to orthopaedic research and education, including writing for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ Resident Orthopaedics Core Knowledge program and contributing to published work involving foot and ankle trauma and arthroplasty.
