Biography

Dr. Thomas H. Sanders is a board certified orthopedic foot and ankle specialist. A Northern Virginia native, Dr. Sanders graduated from Landon School in Bethesda, MD before attending the University of Virginia where he graduated with a BA in economics.

He then attended Georgetown University where he earned his medical degree in 2009 and then completed his orthopedic residency in 2014. He served as the administrative chief resident during his final year of residency. While at Georgetown, he twice earned (2012, 2014) the Hugh H. Hussey award for excellence in teaching as awarded by the Georgetown University School of Medicine.

After residency, he completed a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery/lower extremity trauma and reconstruction at the prestigious Florida Orthopedic Institute in Tampa, Florida.  During his fellowship, Dr. Sanders received additional, specialized training in the most advanced, evidence-based, surgical and non-surgical management of foot and ankle injuries and diseases including total ankle arthroplasty.

Dr. Sanders specializes in the treatment of ankle arthritis, lower extremity trauma and fractures of the ankle and foot (calcaneus, talus, Lisfranc injuries), post-traumatic reconstruction, midfoot and forefoot arthritis, flatfoot reconstruction, and bunions/hammertoes.

While attending UVa, Dr. Sanders was twice selected (2003, 2004) as a first team collegiate All American in rugby. He was then selected for the US National Rugby team and represented the country in New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Cayman Islands. With his own rugby career having ended due to an ankle injury, Dr. Sanders has a special interest in sports and athletic injuries to the foot and ankle with a focus on minimally invasive and arthroscopic treatments. During residency and fellowship, he treated elite level professional, olympic and collegiate athletes.
